After spending my working life as a draughtsman in the shipbuilding and petro-chemical industries I am now retired and living in the village of Langley which is between the New Forest and the Solent and so I like to think that my pieces reflect both those beautiful locations and although my job was in no way artistic, I believe the design aspects of it have always helped me in producing my carvings. I have had a lifelong interest in wood and am a long standing member of the Waterside Woodcarvers where I am a tutor and also the Oaklands Woodcarvers and the Hants & Dorset Stickmakers as well as the Woodlanders art group.
My particular interest is in birds and fish, the shapes of which lend themselves to being depicted in attractively grained wood whether painted or polished.
The sticks are an opportunity for me to experiment in combining wood with other natural materials such as horn, bone and antler.
Of course all this woodwork results in offcuts, hence the small carved items like spectacle holders, brooches and scarf rings.
